How to create a beautiful winter engagement session {Sandpoint Idaho Photographer}

Hi my name is Tanyia Oulman I am the owner of Tanyia Oulman Photography. I did this bright and colorful winter engagement session this past December here in gorgeous Sandpoint Idaho, where I am so happy to call my home!! This session has been featured on “Applebrides” so if you are getting married in the inland northwest you may already be familiar with them. I am known for my bright, colorful images, although I do like black and white photos as well but I just love making my photos pop with color!! This post is not only to show off this beautiful winter engagement session with Shelby and Kyle but to give you tips on how to get bright beautiful images in the snow. A lot of people are typically are afraid that if they get their pictures done in the wintertime that their pictures will be washed out. But as you can see from the pictures below the white snow makes a beautiful canvas to bright colors this adorable couple is wearing. Shelby has a real talent for combining colors. I don’t tell my clients what to wear, I can only give them examples of what works best;) As you can see from the images the blues and reds really stand out against the white backdrop. Of coarse where you have your photo shoot accounts for a lot as well. The different textures of the different species of trees adds a lot of contrast and interest to the pictures. If we had the the shoot in a field the outcome would not be the same no matter how much color you are wearing. Notice in the first part of the shoot with the aspen trees that she is wearing a blue dress and he is wearing a blue shirt but the shirt has a plaid design to it. And even though she is wearing a white sweater there is enough color to the image by just the dress, his jeans and his shirt. The boots make a nice compliment as well. In the second part of the shoot notice that she is wearing plaid this time and he is wearing stripes. The brown in her plaid matches the color of her hair and her boots. I love how the different patterns on their shirts give the pictures visual interest.

It used to be as a rule photographers would tell their clients that solid colors are best. I don’t think so at all!! I like prints and lots of accessories as long as they look good with your partners clothes!! I get asked by my clients all the time, “what should I wear to our photo shoot?” Well that is a loaded question! I ask my clients to think about what their favorite colors are and depending on the season that may make a big difference. You also have to keep in mind where you will be having the session. If you are a visual person like me and you need help envisioning what looks good together than it helps to visit sites like Pinterest. You can get all sorts of ideas for each season even. Just type in for example “Outfits for summer photos” in the pinterest browser. And you will see your options are endless. You can also get lots of great ideas for places to take pictures as well. I love having my clients make a pinterest board of their favorite pictures and sharing them with me. I want you to love your pictures so the more I know what you like the better your pictures will be.
Whether you shoot is in the winter, summer, spring or fall. It is important to keep in mind what you wear will affect what the outcome of what your pictures will look like. So if you have a photo shoot coming up you might want to start thinking about about what you will wear;)

Thanks so much for viewing!!
